MQ-1 Predator is one of most successful and most used Unmanned Aerial Vehicle of USAF.This drone is developed by General Atomic Aeronautical Systems of USA. MQ-9 used in many successful mission for Observations and offensive operations in Afghanistan,Balkans,Pakistan,Iraq etc.
Engineering Details of MQ-1 Predator
MQ-1 Predator equipped with Rotax 914 Cylinder,4-stroke Engine of 115 horse Power. The length of the drone is 8.22 meter ,height is 2.1 meter and has wingspan of 14.8 meters.
MQ-1 can reach maximum altitude upto 7500 to 7600 meters. The total weight of the MQ-1 Predator is 512 Kg without any arms such as missiles.
As the drones used for offensive operations ,it has need to carry arms. This drone carries two AGM-114 Hell fire missiles of Laser guided types.
The fuel capacity of the Drone is 380 liters and due to powerful engines MQ-1 Predator can carry load up to 204 Kilograms and can travel up to 800 Kilometers at maximum speed of 220 Kmph.
The Endurance of the drone is up to 14 hours and can loiter around 700 to 800 Km and can return to the base station.
The Engine designed to produce very small noise as this Drone used for Surveillance in the Enemy Territories. There are totally 150 MQ-1 Predator produced and used by USAF and CIA.
MQ-1 Predator Drone controlled by Satellites of types Ku-Band or C-Band from remote Base Stations. The Satellite receiver placed in the Cockpit Area of the Drone or front part of the Drone.
Due to design limitations the Drone often responds late to the commands from the base stations .
This drone equipped with several cameras, including camera in the front for Controlling and driving the drone from remote Base Stations. It is also equipped Thermal Camera for operations low light or Night operations.
MQ-1 Predator also equipped with several Laser and Radar Systems to mark the target and to destroy it.The Laser Sensors used for aiming the targets and provides guidance to the Manned Vehicles including Land and Air Vehicles.
MQ-1 Predator requires atleast two crew member for controlling ,one Pilot and one crew member for controlling the sensors of the drone.
Though it has many advantages it lacks modern-day requirements so USAF had made updates to MQ-1 Predators and the results is MQ-9 Reaper.
